The StudySmarter Ecosystem
On December 3, 2018 StudySmarter released a mobile app for both iOS and Android. Learning has become easier than ever before and students can now prepare for exams in the bus, train or gym.
This raises the question for both existing and new StudySmarter users, when it’s better to use the WebApp on your laptop and when the mobile app is a better choice.
This is exactly the question we want to answer in this article and show you how to make the most out of StudySmarter.
When do I use the WebApp?
The desktop version of StudySmarter is especially useful for docs management, creation of flashcards and summaries.
Docs Management
Only the content that is tailored to your courses will be helpful. If your professor sets clear focus points in the subject, its general overview will be more a distraction than a relief.
By uploading your lecture slides on StudySmarter, you allow us to provide you with relevant content for your studies. For example, if you and your fellow students upload the same slide deck, you can share flashcards, summaries, and exchange knowledge. As an additional incentive, you will receive an automatically generated mind map for each of your uploaded docs!
It is still possible to upload your docs via the mobile app, however, in most cases we would recommend to do from your laptop or PC. Certainly you already have all necessary study materials on your PC, so the upload will only take a few seconds. At the end of the day, no matter how you do it, WebApp and Mobile App are always synchronized.
Create flashcards
Everyday we use the keyboard on our smartphones to communicate with friends, write down notes or posts. However, it is usually easier and faster to type on a “real” keyboard.
That’s why we recommend creating most of your flashcards in the WebApp. If you notice that you are missing a card while learning, you can simply add it via the Mobile App. But in the beginning of exams when you need to create lots of them, the WebApp is best suited. You will just be faster, as creating one card only takes 15 seconds there, that’s 240 flashcards in one hour of learning time!
Secondly, the display on your PC is larger than on the mobile device, so you can simultaneously view a slide from your lecture and the flashcard tool side by side in the WebApp. You will create page by page without having to look it up. In addition, you can easily insert screenshots and diagrams from your documents into the flashcards, so that questions and answers are no longer just text, but also include relevant graphics, without extra effort!
Obviously, the flashcards you created will also be synchronized. So you can easily create index cards in the WebApp and learn them in the Mobile App.
Summaries
You can easily create your own summaries in our WebApp. If you mark the most important text passages on your lecture slides, you will get your summary without any additional effort. No more copy + paste or hours of typing. Also, here you can insert screenshots from your slides in just two clicks.
Summaries can also be exchanged with your fellow students who uploaded the same PDF and together you can create a perfect summary for the upcoming exam.
When do I use the Mobile App?
Your pocket StudySmarter is primarily designed for learning flashcards, exchanging information with your fellow students and having an overview of your learning progress.
The Mobile App is available free of charge for both Android and Apple.
Learn flashcards
As soon as you have created your own flashcards (or found the ready ones created by your fellow students), some real learning is about to begin. Read the question, try to remember the correct answer and then check it.
Where you learn flashcards is entirely up to you, whether on your laptop or mobile phone. Our ubiquitous learning assistant based on AI algorithms maximizes your learning success on any device. The advantage of the Mobile App is in the name – with its help you can learn your flashcards everywhere and do not have to carry a laptop with your.
In addition, scientific studies have shown that short but frequent learning intervals lead to a higher level of understanding & retention. Even if you learn every day only 5 minutes a day in the underground while commuting, you can increase your progress enormously and swiping the flashcards is even more fun.
Exchange with fellow students
“Does anyone understand task 3 on page 11?” – this kind of question always arises in your everyday studies. Normally, you ask them in overcrowded Facebook groups.
The exchange of learning materials via StudySmarter, on the other hand, has two significant advantages. First, questions are only seen by your fellow students who are studying in the same course, with the same lecture slides, and not by all the students in your program. Secondly, the questions are completely anonymous, which means you can ask the questions that might embarrass you a bit or ask several questions repeatedly, that’s not a problem anymore!
With StudySmarter you can ask your fellow students and get relevant answers with zero risk. You can ask questions and give answers again in the WebApp as well as in the mobile version. The latter fits even better to modern communication and makes the exchange of knowledge even easier.
Overview of learning progress
What can I do? What else do I have to study? It is very easy to lose the overview and keep track of the current status, especially in case you have several courses. What you have achieved in these 8 hours spent in the library, is just so difficult to assess.
StudySmarter offers you detailed statistics on your learning time, your progress and what you need to learn for your upcoming exams. If you wish, you can find out how much time you have invested per page or how well you know each flashcard.
Viewing these statistics is especially fun on your smartphone, but you can also view them on your desktop. You can’t have a better overview of exam preparation!
Even though you can use StudySmarter separately on your smartphone or PC, the combination clearly offers you the greatest added value. All content is always synchronized and you get the best of both worlds.
Uploading docs such as slide decks, creating flashcards and summaries is the easiest with the WebApp. The mobile app is most suited for sharing content with your fellow students, learning flashcards and tracking your learning process. All tools available in the Mobile App, are also available in the WebApp!
Now try it out yourself! Find the perfect combination of the two media to ace your exams!
