Reflective Account: Ethical Principles and Interpersonal Skills for Enhanced Care Practice


I will analyze my personal beliefs and how elements of this subject have helped me learn using the Gibbs Reflection model. I will also reflect on how it might affect my practice and growth.


For me, taking this session has been a worthwhile educational experience. I have developed a deeper knowledge of the significance of protecting people’s rights and liberties in care settings as a result of examining ethical and moral principles. I have learned the value of approaching relationships with compassion, dignity, and respect as I studied effective communication and interpersonal skills. Reflecting on my values has made me more aware of their impact on my practice and progression. Moreover, this module has provided me with tools to enhance dignity and respect in care contexts, thus equipping me to conduct critical analysis and arrive at well-informed conclusions when dealing with complex situations as a reflective practitioner. Consequently, my knowledge, abilities, and personal growth as a care practitioner have been significantly enhanced by this module.


Initially, I harbored some reservations about the program’s potential impact on my work. However, as I progressed through the diverse subjects covered, I recognized the paramount significance of comprehending the ethical and moral principles governing care. Reflection on my values and prejudices and their potential effects on my practice became more prominent after completing the module. This realization, although somewhat unsettling, motivated me to deepen my knowledge further. The module also enlightened me on the importance of interpersonal skills, particularly compassion, empathy, and understanding, in providing individual care. These competencies are vital for building trusting therapeutic relationships and creating a safe and supportive client environment. Through the module, I developed a more profound comprehension of ways to improve the respect and dignity accorded to people in care settings. This module equipped me with improved critical analytical abilities, informed decision-making, and creative problem-solving skills.


The module was a valuable and engaging educational experience, providing comprehensive knowledge and insights. The in-depth discussions on effective communication and interpersonal skills have given me a heightened understanding of their essentiality in delivering quality care. I now recognize how these skills can contribute to providing care and establish strong relationships with patients and colleagues. Through the module’s emphasis on the importance of empathy, compassion, and respect in care, I was able to engage in reflective practices on my values and beliefs, thereby developing a consciousness of their influence on my profession. Consequently, the module has enabled me to acknowledge the significance of ethical and moral principles, which I anticipate will substantially impact my practice and professional growth.


I learned from this lesson that my opinions and values might not align with those of my patients. I discovered that it is crucial to respect their views and beliefs and give them the care they desire. Additionally, I discovered the importance of interpersonal and communication skills in developing rapport and trust with patients. The concept of autonomy is particularly pertinent in terms of ethical and moral theories (Anastasov and Kochoska, 2020, p.58). It is our responsibility as healthcare providers to uphold and respect our patients’ autonomy and to give them the knowledge they require to make wise decisions regarding their care.

I’ve also learned the advantages of being aware of the emotions of those receiving care, and I now recognize the importance of compassion and empathy. Other academics whose research has shown the importance of these feelings in providing care also support this lesson. For instance, a study by Cochrane et al. (2019, p.120) found that empathy was favorably correlated with patient satisfaction and treatment adherence, while a lack of empathy was correlated with unfavorable outcomes, including patient complaints and legal action. Compassion is a crucial component of patient-centered care, and medical staff who exhibited compassion had better patient outcomes (Rawlings et al., 2019). These emotions enable us to establish a kind, welcoming environment for patients and a relationship of trust and understanding. For instance, a study by Noordman et al. (2019, p.5) discovered that patients were more inclined to accept and heed the advice of their healthcare professionals if they were appreciated.

Consequently, the module has been a worthwhile learning experience that has aided me in realizing the significance of moral and ethical principles, effective interpersonal and communication skills, and the influence of my values on my practice. I can give my patients better treatment, develop stronger relationships with them, and contribute to better patient outcomes by comprehending and using these ideas in my practice.

Moreover, I have contrasted a few of the module’s most important lessons with ethical and moral theories. For instance, treating individuals with dignity and respect in a caring environment can be connected to the medical ethics’ requirement to refrain from harming patients, known as the principle of non-maleficence. Healthcare providers can prevent patient injury by delivering treatment that respects patients’ autonomy and dignity.


I am now more aware of my ideals and biases and how they could affect my practice. I’ve realized how crucial effective interpersonal and communication skills are in providing high-quality care. My practice’s operations will change due to my greater awareness of my communication style and how it affects my patients. By paying more attention to my patients’ values and beliefs, I’ll also provide them with the desired care. This training has assisted me in becoming a thoughtful practitioner who does critical analysis and renders decisions in accordance with the evidence and rationale. In order to enhance how individuals are treated with respect and dignity in care settings, I’ll put the strategies I learned in this lesson to use.
