Personal Leadership Assessment

Effective leadership in healthcare and nursing helps drive proper changes, which are critical in promoting a high performance by attracting highly competent staff, retaining them, and empowering them to effectively address the patient’s needs for better health outcomes. Therefore, leaders within the healthcare sector must apply good leadership styles and possess good leadership qualities and skills, ensuring that both workforce and resources are available. It will achieve optimal and safe patient care for better health outcomes and improve their quality of life (Belrhiti et al., 2018). Besides, leadership within the healthcare sector directly impacts patient satisfaction, complications, adverse events, the number and rate of complications, adverse events, patient mortality, and healthcare utilization. These relations emphasize leadership’s central role in a healthcare system (Belrhiti et al., 2018). Therefore, leaders within the healthcare system must conduct regular self-assessments to determine areas they need to improve to ensure better care delivery and improve patient health outcomes. This paper focuses on personal leadership styles, theories, and skills that may positively and negatively impact patient outcomes.

There are critical leadership skills that every leader must possess to enable them effectively achieve their objectives. Different leaders, however, possess different leadership skills. Some of my leadership skills include; integrity and honesty, self-confidence and drive, good communication and delegation skills, good decision-making skills, and lastly, good problem-solving skills and critical thinking. Each of these skills has its strength and weaknesses, which I work on every day to improve continuously. Firstly, integrity and honesty ensure that I make and stick to morally excellent and acceptable decisions. My main weakness is that I cannot entirely agree with colleagues who feel I am too ‘tough.’ The self-confidence enables people to believe in me once they discover I believe in myself. Some people, however, mistake this for pride, which hinders our unity.

Besides, having good communication skills, which include listening to my followers and communicating back most appropriately and respectfully, helps ensure that everyone is well informed on what is expected of them and that their issues are also addressed. The main weakness of this is the presence of language barriers in some scenarios where I am dealing with individuals from different backgrounds. I am not fluent in many foreign languages, hence making communication less effective since there is a need for a translator. Good delegation skills enable me to ensure work efficiency and that individual if assigned work based on their qualifications. It, however, becomes challenging when there are fewer staff, hence the need to delegate more tasks; thus, the employees feel overworked. Good decision-making and problem-solving skills also help address various concerns and arrive at a decision that will benefit the facility and healthcare providers. The main weakness is the need to involve everyone in the decision-making process, which sometimes makes the process slow and less effective.

Leadership Theory

Various leadership theories describe how leaders come to be, which implies how particular people become leaders. The theory that is most related to my leadership assessment is the contingency theory. As a leader, I adjust my leadership styles and apply relevant skills depending on the situation. It is the main feature of the contingency theory, which enables a leader to be still effective regardless of the situational context (Heller, 2019). As a leader, both internal and external factors affect one’s effectiveness. It requires leaders to be flexible to ensure their effectiveness under various circumstances.

Quality Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) principle(s)

This program was developed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing to enhance competencies among nurses graduating from various colleges to promote safer and high-quality care delivery. One of the principles of focus is teamwork and collaboration (Altmiller & Hopkins-Pepe, 2019). Effective teamwork and interprofessional collaboration are critical in enhancing safer, high-quality care delivery. For these teams to be effective, they must have leaders with proper leadership skills to enhance unity as they aim at achieving their objectives.

Leadership and Management

Leadership and management are closely linked. Leadership focuses on influencing people to achieve the objectives, while management focuses on working with others to get work done through coordinating and organizing things (Liphadzi et al., 2017). Leadership focuses on leading and encouraging people, whereas management focuses on coordinating organizational activities. Additionally, leadership is built on trust, contrary to management, where a manager has control of their subordinates (Liphadzi et al., 2017). Besides, leadership is practice and brings changes, while management is reactive and brings stability.

Week 1 Concepts

Various concepts are crucial within a workplace to promote efficiency and achieve the set goals and objectives. The concept of focus is time management in workplaces. Assigning a timeline for a particular activity helps ensure that individuals assigned such a role can work on it and deliver within the stipulated time frame (Liphadzi et al., 2017). This enhances productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness, as each individual will complete the tasks delegated to them in time. Time management also helps plan the activity to be carried out in a particular period. Organizing the activities based on the time each should be completed also ensures that those with urgency are prioritized first, thereby maximizing the production.
