Self-Analysis of Leadership Abilities

After utilizing the two leadership style self-assessment tools: Leadership Style Survey and Leadership Matrix Survey to evaluate my leadership abilities, I have found that I possess both Participative Style and Team Leadership abilities. This means that as a team leader, I exercise team participation approach where the opinions and contributions of each team member count. It is also an indication that I involve my employees or team members in the decision making process. While Leadership  Style Survey helps to determine individual’s leadership style, the Leadership Matrix Survey is more specific and seeks to establish the degree at which a leader gets involved in people and tasks.

Based on the Leadership Style Survey assessment tool, I am a democratic leader, as illustrated by a score of 44. Democratic leaders allow employees to participate in decision making and they also accept workers’ decisions. It comprises of responsibilities distribution, team members empowerment, and group-based decisions (Gastil, 2004). Participative leadership leads to employee job satisfaction and encourage employees to participate in finding solutions to organizational problems. My democratic style is further supplemented by the delegative style in which I had a score of 35. I also exercise Authoritarian Style.

My suitability of Participative Style can be justified in line with the Leadership Style Survey that best leaders are endowed with participative approach and supplement with other two modes: Authoritarian Style and Delegative Style to apply them whenever and wherever needed (A Big Dog & Little Dog, 2015). Each leadership style is above a score of 20, meaning that I can apply the mixture of three leadership styles in addressing diverse issues within my departmental and organizational context. I believe having scored above average in all the three leadership styles; I could not find any area which I think I should improve on.Order Now from Course ResearchersBased on the Leadership Matrix Survey assessment tool, I am both people and task-oriented. The results showed that I a more task-oriented than people-oriented. My ability to work with people was presented by a score of 6 whereas the ability to focus on tasks was illustrated by a score of 6.8.  With a score of (6, 6.8), it is an indication that I possess both skills on people and tasks. According to A Big Dog & Little Dog (2015) a Leadership Survey Matrix score of (6,6 to 9,9) portrays strong skills on both people and tasks. However, I should focus more on people than tasks since when people are satisfied they are likely to focus on tasks without much supervision or control from the leader.

Having team leader skills means that I can provide direction, instructions, guidance and leadership to a team in a bid to achieve the set organizational goals. When team members or employees are motivated through leadership, they are likely to align the goals with that of the organization (Naile & Selesho, 2014). Having shown robust team leadership skills, I believe that I can lead employees in different stages. For example, through team direction skills, I can steer the team towards the attainment of a specific goal. I can as well develop a new team, support team members to achieve both the individuals and collective goals, and encourage team members to synergize by bringing together their ideas and strengths to the benefit of the organization.

Both Leadership Style Survey and Leadership Matrix Survey assessment tools evaluate the ability of a leader to work with people to complete tasks. Leadership Style survey focuses mainly on how a leader interacts with people. With Leadership Style Survey, the leader can be Authoritarian, Participative or Delegative Leadership Matrix Survey, on the other hand, is used to determine whether a leader is more focused on people or tasks. A task-oriented leader is authoritarian and will pressurize people to complete tasks. A people-oriented leader is socialite and focuses on building people’s welfare at the expense of the tasks.
