Future of Nursing Report

Individuals from different backgrounds have the right to high-quality, safe, evidence-based healthcare services. Achieving this, however, requires that the healthcare sector is equipped not only with adequate healthcare providers but also ensuring that the care providers have adequate levels of competencies through skills and knowledge to coordinate care to patients for better health outcomes effectively. Nurses as the primary caregivers are essential to a nation’s health status. Therefore, they require a favorable working environment that allows for professional advancement autonomy and is supportive. Besides, various disparities also exist, resulting in health inequalities that subsequently affect people’s health (Jones et al., 2019). Such challenges are the primary reason that led to the report, The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity which is the focus of this paper.

The Work of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine That Led To the Report

Various disparities resulted in health inequities that subsequently affected the ability of multiple individuals to achieve their health potential. It resulted in a study requested by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, whose primary objective was to determine the appropriate path for the nursing profession. It would help reduce the inequities created by various disparities that hindered the population’s achievement of full health potential (Wakefield et al., 2021).

It was mainly created on the aspect of using expertise and capacity. Through these, it was identified that nursing could significantly contribute to ensuring equitable public health at everyone’s service. This report was built on the previous The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2011) report, and in addition to aiming at ensuring health equity, it also tries to ensure that in the process, the costs are kept at bay, adequate utilization of technology and more focus is made on patient and family-centered care (Wakefield et al., 2021).

Trend Occurring In the Nursing Workforce and How Nursing Education Is Adapting To Meet the Evolving Needs Of the Profession

The current population consists of an increasing number of individuals with complex health conditions and the growing population of the elderly. This demand for an increase in the number of available nurses and advancement in knowledge and skills through education to help them properly manage the complex health needs. The number of nurses has steadily risen for the past 100 years (Hassmiller, 2022). It forms the most significant proportion of healthcare professionals and is widely spread across different settings, including the rural areas where the most vulnerable population is present.

Nurse education has also shifted from diploma programs that are primarily hospital-based to degree programs in colleges and universities. It has helped improve the skills and knowledge of nurses, enabling them to participate in other research-based programs and place them in a better position to address complex patient health needs (Hassmiller, 2022). The advancement of education also places nurses in leadership positions. Being in constant contact with patients, nurses are better placed to understand the various patient needs. Therefore, they are essential policymakers who help drive policies to improve patient care and enhance healthcare equity (Hassmiller, 2022).

The Role of State-Based Action Coalitions

The various state-based action coalitions play critical roles in advancing the report’s multiple goals and addressing issues relating to healthcare costs. The different states have helped in supporting the implementation of the report’s recommendations by creating models that help strengthen nursing education for professional development and as a way of quality improvements (Sensmeier, 2021). Besides, the coalitions also help develop proper workforce models to address any existing faculty shortages. The coalitions also focus on removing practice barriers in various states, thus creating room for collaborations that are essential in care coordination and improving health equity (Sensmeier, 2021).

The Initiatives on Which My State’s Action Coalition Is Working

My state’s action coalition is focusing on various initiatives that enhance professional advancement for nurses and working on the license to allow free practice in other states with a shortage of nursing staff. These aim to address health equity by ensuring that individuals can access healthcare services regardless of their health conditions or backgrounds since there is someone to attend to them. It has also established various educational programs that allow advancement in education and knowledge to enhance practice. It also works with other state-based coalitions to remove the practice barriers and facilitate the free flow of human resources to areas with shortages.

Barriers to Advancement That Currently Exist In My State

Some challenges pose significant barriers to successful advancement within my state. Some of these challenges include; facing racial discrimination, which blocks some black nurses from entering leadership positions (Iheduru-Anderson, 2021). The other barrier is the inadequate support and mentorship programs, discouraging even experienced and highly qualified nurses from applying for higher positions. There is also insufficient financial support to cater to the various requirements for advancement by the nurses. To address these, the nursing advocates have held campaigns to discourage racial discrimination, advocated for grants for further advancement, and created support groups to offer mentorship for various nurses (Iheduru-Anderson, 2021). However, there are limited impacts; thus, these barriers are still a significant concern.

The various health disparities can significantly impact the population’s well-being through the creation of health inequity. The report helps address these through provisions of recommendations aimed at improving access. Various states, through the state-based coalitions, are therefore responsible for implementing the various recommendations to enhance healthcare delivery and equity.
