Introduction

The case involved Mr. Jones, who had a history of stroke and heart failure and was in need of an interprofessional collaborative approach. According to White-Williams and Shirey (2022), interprofessional collaborative practice involves specialists from various disciplines working together to deliver exceptional patient care. In this case, the interprofessional care team was comprised of various specialists, including a family nurse practitioner, neurologist, nutritionist, social worker, occupational therapist, psychiatric mental health NP, healthcare admin and leadership, and a primary care provider. Ethical Challenges Associated with the Management of Mr. Jones

A notable ethical challenge associated with the management of Mr. Jones is patient autonomy and informed decision-making. According to Liang et al. (2022), patient autonomy is focused on a patient’s responsibility in making healthcare decisions independently. Based on the cognitive and physical limitations that Mr. Jones faced, it is critical to ensure that he receives all necessary information and support to make informed decisions regarding the treatment plan and daily living activities. This required addressing factors such as grief, which may have impacted his ability to make informed decisions. Another ethical concern in Mr. Jones’ management is related to the ethical principle of justice and fairness. Mr. Jones has limited access to healthy food options and his neighborhood’s lack of resources, which may worsen his health conditions and thereby limit his ability to adhere to dietary recommendations. This ethical issue points to the need to address social determinants of health and ensure equitable access to essential services.

The Interprofessional Approach in Dealing with the Ethical Issues

Addressing the identified ethical challenges required an interprofessional approach. Each member of the healthcare team played a critical role in ensuring that Mr. Jones’s management plan was comprehensive, ethical, and tailored to his specific needs. An example of such a case involved the FNP and social work scope of practice in assessing Mr. Jones’s psychosocial needs and providing emotional support. To address this issue, it was important to ensure clear communication and collaboration and have these practitioners work together to ensure the development of a cohesive care plan. As a collaborative team, there was a need to establish open lines of communication, regular exchange of information, and coordination of interventions to ensure seamless and integrated care. Personal Contribution to the Group Project

As a group assignment, I was actively involved in completing the task and participating in group discussions. One main contribution was providing information about how, as an FNP, I would participate in the management of Mr. Jones. As an FNP, my roles with the inter-collaborative team include collaboration with the team, ensuring medical adherence, appointment follow-up, and patient education. As part of the discussion, I highlighted the need for ongoing assessment of his decision-making capacity.

Conclusion

The management of Mr. Jones’s case required a comprehensive and collaborative approach that addressed his medical needs but also his social, environmental, and emotional well-being. An interprofessional approach required that the healthcare team effectively address the emerging ethical challenges associated with his care, promote patient autonomy, and ensure equitable access to necessary resources.
